Gloria Yiu, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Gloria Yiu is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at UCLA. She is a physician-scientist and studies how normal and disordered immune-cell development drives disease, with the goal of developing new therapies for her patients.

Dr. Yiu earned her BA from Pomona College and completed her MD/PhD in Stanford’s MSTP with Dr. P.J. Utz, where her interest in autoimmunity began. Many autoimmune diseases disproportionately affect women and ethnic minorities —communities she is committed to serving. She trained in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital, completed rheumatology fellowship in UCLA’s STAR Program, and conducted postdoctoral research with Dr. Gay Crooks.

In her clinical practice, Dr. Yiu takes care of patients with connective tissue diseases and autoimmune manifestations of monogenic immune dysregulation. She leads the Yiu Lab, which studies thymopoiesis, regulatory T cells, and gene-editing strategies, aiming to translate fundamental insights into therapies.

Dr. Yiu has been fortunate to train with scientists who emphasized transformative science and trainee-centered advocacy in equal measure. She is dedicated to carrying this ethos forward — mentoring with intention and building a lab culture where rigor, collaboration, and growth are championed.

Her work has been recognized by the A.P. Giannini Postdoctoral Fellowship, Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Medical Scientists, and an NIH NIAID K08 Award.
